The Forerunners looked different than I imagined in the books...maybe the orange things were just droids made by them? Is it just me, or do the orange crawler things looks like the crawlers in Gears of War?

I don't think those were actual Forerunners. Just droid-type-things like you said. A lot of their body parts aren't even connected, and just float there, so They can't be alive.
